The Legend of King Arthur is one that weaves its way through Cornish heritage, and the famous Tintagel Castle is a place that has been linked to the legend since the 12th century, following the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth.
The location has actually been inhabited since the Roman period, and is said to have been the birthplace of the famous king (usually estimated to around the 5th century). Though it wasn’t until the 13th century that the current structure was built over previous remains. Being such a large and iconic site, it’s only natural that myths have clung to its crumbling walls, and the huge cliff-top castle will forever carry Arthurian connotations. Learn more about Tintagel on the website.
Now in the care of English Heritage, Tintagel Castle is a magnificent complex of medieval ruins that mould themselves into the side of a dramatic headland off the northern coast of Cornwall. As well as the castle there are a number of other nearby attractions such as Merlin’s Cave, an interesting sea cave on the shoreline at the base of the steep cliff. You’ll come to it as you explore the ruins. Merlin, as you’ll know, was a legendary mage and advisor to King Arthur. Cornish folklore is steeped in magic and the supernatural. Not far from the village of Tintagel is the fascinating Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. The collection inside has been growing for over 60 years, and the museum opened up in its current location back in 1960. There are all kind of weird and wonderful objects inside.
