Go Wild About Gardens this week!
It's time to celebrate our precious green spaces and give a little something back to nature.
Wild About Gardens is a fantastic initiative that encourages us all to support the local biodiversity in our own back gardens. The RHS and The Wildlife Trusts have teamed up and, together, are striving to increase awareness and understanding of our local environments.
According to Wild About Gardens, 60% of a large focus group of UK animal and plant species have declined in the past 50 years. That's a huge amount! And the organisation wants to show us that we can make a difference to this in our gardens, with just simple changes. By making your garden more wildlife friendly frogs, hedgehogs, house sparrows and many more creatures that are all becoming less common, will really begin to benefit. This year Hedgehog Street have joined the force and are stressing the importance of ensuring these spiny critters can access a range of habitats. Linking your gardens together, creating a pathway for them to use is key.
There are all kinds of hints and tips on the website if you want to look into how you can do your bit; build a hedgehog home, pick the right plants for pollinators, or grow a mini meadow... www.wildaboutgardensweek.org.uk.
Or if you fancy getting more involved this week, take a look at the fantastic range of events and activities that are going on all over the UK.
